Richard Wilson

ANECDOTE...

The Italian tradition of landscape painting and the beauties of the Italian landscape were the factors that caused Wilson's change of allegiance from portraits to landscapes in mid-career. On a visit to the famous waterfall at Terni, he is said to have exclaimed, "Well-done water—by God!"

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE...

Welsh painter. He trained as a portraitist, but after a visit to Italy in the 1750s changed his interest to landscapes. He became the first notable British landscape painter.
